A CALL TO SERVICE [SIGNED], John Kerry
1 A CALL TO SERVICE [SIGNED] John Kerry
New York A Call To Service 2003 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
9 x 12.75"; xvii/202 pages; Flat signed on half title. Owners name in small black marker on first blank. Author: John Kerry - John Forbes Kerry is an American politician who is the 68th and current United States Secretary of State. He served as a United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1985 to 2013, and was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Kerry was the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2004 Presidential Election, who lost to incumbent President George W. Bush. The son of an Army Air Corps veteran, Kerry was born in Aurora, Colorado. He attended boarding school in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and went on to graduate from Yale University class of 1966, where he majored in political science and became a member of the influential Skull and Bones secret society. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1966, and during 1968-1969 served an abbreviated four-month tour of duty in South Vietnam as officer-in-charge (OIC) of a Swift Boat. For that service, he was awarded combat medals that include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Securing an early return to the United States, Kerry joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War in which he served as a nationally recognized spokesman and as an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War. He appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs where he deemed United States war policy in Vietnam to be the cause of "war crimes." After receiving his J. D. From Boston College Law School, Kerry worked as an Assistant District Attorney and co-founded a private firm. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts under Michael Dukakis from 1983 to 1985, where he worked on an early forerunner to the national Clean Air Act. He won a tight Democratic primary in 1984 for the U. S. Senate and was sworn in the following January. On the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he led a series of hearings from 1987 to 1989 which were a precursor to the Iran-Contra affair. He was an early backer of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, but became a strong opponent of the subsequent war. Kerry based his 2004 presidential campaign on opposition to the Iraq War. He and his running mate Senator John Edwards lost the race, finishing 35 electoral votes behind the Republican ticket headed by President George W. Bush (just 19 short of the 270 required for election). Subsequently he established the Keeping America's Promise PAC. Kerry became chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2009, and in 2011 he was appointed to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. Having been nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and then confirmed by the U. S. Senate by a vote of 94-3 on January 29, 2013, Kerry assumed the office on February 1, 2013.; Signed by Author; 0 34851

INVENTING A NATION: WASHINGTON, ADAMS, JEFFERSON [SIGNED 1ST], Gore Vidal
20 INVENTING A NATION: WASHINGTON, ADAMS, JEFFERSON [SIGNED 1ST] Gore Vidal
New Haven Yale University Press 2003 0300101716) First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
198 pages; Gore Vidal (born Eugene Louis Vidal) was an American writer (novels, essays, screenplays, stage plays) and a public intellectual, who was known for his patrician manner, wit, and aphorisms. Vidal was born to a political family; his grandfather was Thomas Gore, U. S. Senator for Oklahoma (1907-21, 1931-37). As a member of the Democratic Party, Vidal twice ran for political office. As as political commentator, Vidal's subject was the United States, especially the imperialistic foreign policy, which reduced the U. S. To a decaying empire. His essays were published in The Nation, the New Statesman, the New York Review of Books and Esquire. As a public intellectual, Gore Vidal was known for his continual quarrels with other public intellectuals and writers, such as William F. Buckley, Jr. , Norman Mailer, and Truman Capote. Of his fiction, "Myra Breckinridge" (1968) was a widely regarded novel of social mores; in the historical novel genre, "Julian" (1964) , "Burr" (1973) , and "Lincoln" (1984) are considered his best works. His third novel, "The City and the Pillar" (1948) , offended the sensibilities of conservative critics (literary and political) , because it featured unambiguous presentations of male homosexuality. Personally, Gore Vidal rejected the terms "homosexual" and "heterosexual" as inherently false labels, because he believed that men and women potentially are pansexual. Author-signed first printing of this essay on the founders of the United States. Gore Vidal's signature appears on the title page. The volume is bound in blue paper-covered boards and a blue cloth spine with stamped gilt lettering. The volume and dust jacket are in excellent condition. The jacket is preserved in mylar cover. Portrait of the first three American presidents; Signed by Author; 0 35551

BOOK COLLECTING

Almost from time immemorial book collecting, and before that manuscript collecting, and before that anything that you could scratch or carve a message on, has been the subject of much interest. Today we have many categories of book collecting- Fancy bindings, Religious books, Philosophy books, Mystery books, Modern 1st editions, Leather bound books, Textbooks, Early readers, Archaeology books, Art books, Children's books and numberless others. You need not break the bank on 15th and 16th century works. There are some areas that are not yet popular and have a lot of growing to do. Alice in Wonderland with it's endless editions and artists is a fertile field for study as is Disney and Pinocchio. Religious books are now enjoying a greatly increased following. Early readers have a ways to go in appreciation yet. Poetry works may be on the decline a bit though still holding firm. Areas that appear unexploited at this time are Salesman's Dummy books. These are typically turn of the century or early 20th century works comprising highlights of several books. They were designed for salesmen to take orders with. These frequently included covers, spines, limited amounts of text and a good supply of illustrations from each featured book all bound together. Currently these are cheap out of all proportion to their scarcity. Search and you shall find in the land where the Princes of Serendip reign. ARC's (Advance review Copies) are also scarce relative to their key role in publication. These usually contain uncorrected proofs of the book to be issued, often along with author's signatures. They usually sell, even signed, at a considerable discount to the First Edition work which actually came later. Local Cookbooks such as published for church groups, clubs, etc. are now very low priced. You have to have a game plan here or risk being overwhelmed by the mass of cheap material now out there. Beeton's 1907 magazine, arguably the most highly valued magazine is popular for pritning "A Study in Scarlet", Sherlock Holmes first appearance in print. This sold in 1929 for a few shillings, about 1974 it achieved 80L at auction. A couple of years ago it exeeded $150,000 when sold at auction. Early magazines with their appearances of Edgar Alan Poe, Frank Baum, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Maxfield Parrish, Winslow Homer and the Wyeths among hundreds of coveted authors and artists in print are a fertile field. The best children's collection assembled was put together by a poorly paid school teacher in the the years when Children's books were not considered suitable for serious collectors. Today that collection resides at Yale to world acclaim. There is such a large world out there. Pick your specialty, buy quality, and your search will be a happy one and your rewards many.
