Edition. 8vo, black cloth, gilt spine lettering, untrimmed. Covers still very clean, top third of spine slightly sunned, dusting to top edge, text firm and clean, 1933 owner's ink signature at verso of front free endpaper, the scarce original dust wrapper in just good condition, spine lacking top third with remainder heavily sunned and lettering lost, wear and chipping at other edges and panels, several tears, lacking 1 X 1 1/2" segment at top left of rear panel. Greene's second novel, after "The Man Within" (1929) ; both were preceded by a small volume of poems published in 1925. The U. S. Edition of the volume in this lot was only 1000 copies, without any subsequent printings, as initial sales were poor and Greene later decided to dismiss the work as a bad potboiler and refused to permit later editions.
