Booksellers sticker partially removed from corner of Vol Is frontpastedown and still intact at corner of Vol IIs front pastedown. Usually minor foxing (less than would be expected, although Vol IIsprelims are more foxed). Occasional dampstain (mostly near inner edge, rear of Vol I, upper corner of Vol IIs frontis recto and first fewdozen pages, corner of plate facing Vol II, p181, and text of Vol II, pp434-439). Tear to the year printed in upper margin of Vol I, p49-50and to outer edge of plates facing Vol I, pp74 and p125 (outsideplate mark). Plate facing Vol I, p337 has 2 stains (of which one is tothe right portion of its border and the other to upper plate mark, neither affecting image). Plate facing Vol I, p531 has inkstain toupper margin (not within plate mark). Tiny inkstains to Vol I, p304(not affecting legibility) and to plate facing Vol I, p345 (only slightlynoticeable). 2 plates in Vol I repaired on verso (facing pp337 and477). Plate of Charles 1st: taking leave of his Children (Vol II, p67) has stain to border, margin, and a small portion of image (outsideits focal area). Plates are mostly portraits, but include many detailed historical scenes, including The Chief Druids gathering theMistletoe (after Vol Is Introduction) , Landing of William theConquerer (Vol I, pp102-103) , Death of William Rufus (Vol I, pp136-137) , Signing of the Magna Carta (Vol I, p225) , Burning ofArchbishop Crammer (Vol I, pp528-529) , crowds at Charles Isbeheading (with text of the death warrant above image, Vol II, pp66-67) , Siege of Quebec (Vol II, p481) , and naval operations (VolII, pp. 445, 467, 469, 471.
