Jack Butterworth had served as a scout in the Indian wars, fought wildcats in Texas, worked for the Union Pacific, done a little gold mining...and hunted for buffalo. The year was 1898, and no one in Oregon had seen a buffalo in the last ten years. The noble breed was dying out -- along with the buffalo hiders who had made their living from them. But Butterworth claimed he was hot on the trail of one of the creatures. And, somehow, Jeff believed him enough to join the quest. In the company of Jack Butterworth, all of the danger and excitement of the Wild West seemed to come alive for Jeff Curry. But after getting involved with a runaway Indian, the young would-be buffalo hunter soon learned what it was to be hunted down himself -- by the law."
