[14], 164 pp. Engraved frontispiece by Coypal engraved by Audran, 28 plates (13 double page) by Philippe II Duke of Orleans, engraved by Audran. Bound in 19th century olive moroccan leather. Gilt rule. Original marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Illustrations after the paintings by Coypal and the Duke of Orleans. The "Longus du Regent", the first French book whose illustration was after a prince, was printed one year ahead of the "Fables de La Motte" illustrated by Gillot; The "Longus" is considered by Dacier as the first book illustrated by a French painter. Ray. I. 10. Cohen - De Ricci 648-51. Condition; Rubbing to leather. Stamp facing title page. Slight toning, occasional spotting to plates. Without the later 1728 engraving Petit Pieds sometimes found. An ancient Greek novel written in the Roman Empire, the only known work of the second-century AD Greek novelist and romance writer Longus. Two children grow up together and much excitement such as raiders and pirates.
